Elevating the Art of Transformation
It’s no surprise that Dr. Carolyn Chang has been named to San Francisco’s Best Doctors lists for years. As the region’s most recognizable plastic surgeon, she has helped thousands of patients achieve beautiful, transformative results. Now she’s expanding her already prestigious medical practice and taking it to a new level.

How S.F.’s Dr. Carolyn Chang stays a cut above the rest
Creating aliases for patients at the hospital and arranging special nighttime operating hours to insure privacy are fairly routine for San Francisco-based plastic surgeon, Dr. Carolyn Chang. “My practice attracts higher-profile people who want to stay under the radar,” she says. “A lot of individuals come to me from places like Southern California both to escape the media and because my aesthetic is more minimal and less obvious.”

Dr. Carolyn Chang is a rare mix of good eye and gifted hands. The Stanford University trained doctor is the Vice Chairman of Plastic Surgery at California Pacific Medical Center and sits on some impressive medical credentials. But Dr. Chang seems to take to these accolades lightly. Optimal surgical results take more than grasping measurable skills; rather, in her words, “you have to be able to see and interpret the skills on individuals.” And these individuals form an interesting clientele.
A Natural Evolution
After searching in vain for gentle products for eye area, a cosmetic surgeon helps develop one
Juice Beauty’s newest product for the delicate skin around the eyes was developed to combat one of the longest-running problems in Dr. Carolyn Chang’s practice; irritation and swelling caused, surprisingly enough, by medical-grade products used in the eye area after surgery.
The San Francisco cosmetic plastic surgeon has partnered with the Marin organics company to create Stem Cellular Instant Eye Lift.

Sure, Dr. Carolyn Chang cuts a nice figure in an Alexander McQueen ball gown. But can her skills with the knife cut it in the world of plastic surgery?
Colleagues and clients say yes. Chang, who trained at Stanford University and is Vice Chairman of Plastic Surgery at California Pacific Medical Center, was voted by her peers as best plastic surgeon in Marin Magazine’s Best Doctors issue, and best in San Francisco by readers of the Nob Hill Gazette, a demographic that knows a thing or two about keeping the years at bay.

How many doctors can say that the hospital where they were born happens to be the institution where they attended undergraduate school, medical school, and performed their residency? But Stanford University is just that for the aesthetic plastic surgeon Dr. Carolyn Chang, who spent her formative years in between growing up in Tennessee. “I always knew I wanted to do surgery,” Chang says of her return to Palo Alto and entrée into medicine.
Dressing Up
Doctor practices high fashion with surgical precision
You won’t catch Dr. Carolyn Chang wearing one of those drab institutional lab coats when consulting with her patients. The Pacific Heights plastic surgeon is known for her chic outfits and designer shoes she wears everywhere except the OR.
“I have to wear scrubs three or four days a week,” she says. “But when I see patients, I never wear a white coat. Never.” She loves to create symmetry in her clothing – to tell a color story, maybe, or play with drape and flow.
Mother's Little Helper
Bay Area moms are embracing prenatal yoga, natural home births, and organic baby food . . . but tummy tucks and boob jobs? Absolutely, says Dr. Carolyn Chang
Dr. Carolyn Chang’s patients don’t look like they have gone under the knife. The Stanford-trained plastic surgeon specializes in female patients who flock to her modern Pacific Heights perch because she knows what women really want. Unlike many of her counterparts, for example, Chang steers women away from breast implants that are so pronounced they defy gravity. Her minimalist aesthetic draws candidates you’d never expect to her operating table, even in a city as anti-plastic as ours.

Don’t ask Dr. Chang about Dr. 90210. “The public is fascinated by active cutting. It’s a gross fascination.” That’s not what drew Chang as a medical student. “I’m visual, and I love using my hands. In medical school, I told them I wanted to do surgery, and they paired me with the only woman in Stanford’s plastic surgery department. At that time, only 7 percent of board-certified plastic surgeons were women.”

Want to look 10 years younger? Plastic surgery may be the answer
Do Asians really age slower than people of other races? Nora Honda, a 37-year-old Japanese American, doesn’t think so. For the past year or so, she’s noticed her face looking older, but she can’t quite pinpoint the changes. She has no major wrinkles or bags and her skin is still dewy, but often people tell her she appears tired and drawn. Nora goes to Dr. Carolyn Chang for answers.

Top female plastic surgeon, brilliant, chic and under 40
Chanel suit and a scalpel are all it takes to make Dr. Carolyn Chang smile. The 39-year-old plastic surgeon is fast becoming a force to be reckoned with in the world of nips and tucks, but if you ask Dr. Chang what really makes her happy it has nothing to do with superficiality. “I love helping patients feel better about themselves on the inside,” she said. But she isn’t your everyday General Practitioner; she’s a well-recognized and respectable Plastic Surgeon, recently chosen by San Francisco Magazine as one of the ‘top doctors in the San Francisco Bay area to look for’. She is flattered by the compliment.
